With 16, 1 million income tax declarations submitted online in 2014, the electronic tax declaration ELSTER is judged as one of the most successful digitization projects in Germany by the digital industry association Bitkom. Since its introduction the demand for the online service has been steadily growing. According to Bitkom, the reasons for this are, that the services, especially after last year’s introduction of the pre-filled tax declaration, are easy, comfortable and secure to use. Test calculations of possible tax reimbursements, plausibility function and encrypted data transmission including ELSTER certificate usage were leading to a high degree of usability and thereby also to an excellent acceptance of this digital service.
